How Much Bandwidth Do Common Workloads Need?

Estimate the download and upload capacity for video meetings and streaming, then leave room for other devices sharing the connection.

Size for simultaneous use, not the plan headline

Bandwidth is shared by activities happening at the same time. A single 4K stream has a different requirement from two 4K streams plus a video meeting and a cloud backup. Start with the busiest realistic combination in your household, and leave capacity for ordinary background traffic.

Activity (one device) Published bandwidth guidance What to include in your estimate
Netflix 4K video 15 Mbps download, with a stable connection Add the streams watched at the same time.
Zoom 1080p group meeting 3.8 Mbps up and 3.0 Mbps down Count each participant or active meeting endpoint.
Microsoft Teams meeting, recommended 1080p quality 2.5 Mbps up and 4 Mbps down Screen sharing and meeting layout can change usage.

These are service recommendations, not universal minimums. Apps adapt quality to available capacity, and their requirements change with resolution, frame rate, and features. See Netflix, Zoom, and Microsoft Teams for their published guidance.

Keep download and upload separate

Add upload needs as well as download needs. Video calls send video upstream, and backups or livestreams can use much more upload capacity than casual browsing. An asymmetric plan can have ample download speed and still struggle when several devices upload at once.

Treat bandwidth as one part of responsiveness

Once a connection has enough spare capacity for the activities in progress, a larger plan does not automatically make each interaction respond faster. Latency, jitter, Wi-Fi conditions, and queueing under load are separate measurements. For a practical check, compare idle and loaded latency as described in Latency Under Load.
